Kano School Daruma

A mid Edo period painting of the patriarch of Zen Buddhism Bodhi Darma or better known in Japan as Daruma. Many paintings of Daruma are known to be almost self portraits of the person who painted it. The older priests are recommended to paint this figure to show their religious awareness and thus the product tends to look like that of the artist.
